The parts of Medicare

Medicare is the federal health program for people 65 and older and for some younger people with qualifying disabilities. Part A covers hospital and inpatient care, Part B covers doctor visits and outpatient care, Part C (Medicare Advantage) is a private-plan alternative that bundles A and B, and Part D covers prescription drugs. Florida's large retiree population means abundant plan choices—and a lot of marketing—so independent guidance is especially valuable.

Two ways to round out your coverage

Most people choose between two paths: Original Medicare plus a Medigap policy and a standalone Part D drug plan, which keeps the freedom to see any provider that accepts Medicare; or a Medicare Advantage plan, which bundles coverage through a private insurer that typically uses a network and often includes drug coverage. You generally cannot combine a Medigap policy with a Medicare Advantage plan. Maru explains both so you can pick the one that fits your health and budget.

Florida's Medicare market

Florida has one of the highest Medicare Advantage participation rates in the country and a very active marketplace. That means real choice, but also aggressive advertising. Unlike Washington, Florida has no annual Medigap birthday rule, so if you choose the Medigap path, getting your initial plan right matters because switching later can involve medical underwriting.

When to enroll

Your Initial Enrollment Period runs for seven months around your 65th birthday. The Annual Enrollment Period each fall (October 15 to December 7) lets you change plans, and your one-time Medigap Open Enrollment window gives you a guaranteed right to buy a supplement without health questions. Enrollment in a plan may be limited to certain times of the year, so timing matters.

How Maru helps Florida beneficiaries

Maru is a licensed independent agency. We compare the specific Medicare Advantage, Medigap, and Part D options available in your county, coordinate your drug coverage, and cut through the marketing noise with plain-language guidance. Our help costs you nothing—carriers pay licensed agents and plan prices are set the same whether you enroll with us or on your own.

Frequently asked questions

Does it cost anything to work with a Medicare agent in Florida?
No. Maru is paid by the insurance carriers, and plan prices are the same whether you enroll through an agent or on your own, so you never pay more for our help.
Why does Florida have so many Medicare Advantage plans?
Florida's large retiree population supports one of the most competitive Medicare Advantage markets in the country. That means more choices but also heavy marketing—we compare the plans actually available to you so you can decide clearly.
Do you offer every Medicare plan in my area?
No. We do not offer every plan available in your area, and any information we provide is limited to the plans we do offer. For a complete list of your options, contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE.
Can I switch Medigap plans later in Florida?
Florida has no annual birthday rule, so outside guaranteed-issue windows insurers can medically underwrite you. That makes your initial Medigap choice important, and we help you get it right.
