Medicare is the federal health program for people 65 and older and for some younger people with qualifying disabilities. Part A covers hospital and inpatient care, Part B covers doctor visits and outpatient care, Part C (Medicare Advantage) is a private-plan alternative that bundles A and B, and Part D covers prescription drugs. Florida's large retiree population means abundant plan choices—and a lot of marketing—so independent guidance is especially valuable.
Most people choose between two paths: Original Medicare plus a Medigap policy and a standalone Part D drug plan, which keeps the freedom to see any provider that accepts Medicare; or a Medicare Advantage plan, which bundles coverage through a private insurer that typically uses a network and often includes drug coverage. You generally cannot combine a Medigap policy with a Medicare Advantage plan. Maru explains both so you can pick the one that fits your health and budget.
Florida has one of the highest Medicare Advantage participation rates in the country and a very active marketplace. That means real choice, but also aggressive advertising. Unlike Washington, Florida has no annual Medigap birthday rule, so if you choose the Medigap path, getting your initial plan right matters because switching later can involve medical underwriting.
Your Initial Enrollment Period runs for seven months around your 65th birthday. The Annual Enrollment Period each fall (October 15 to December 7) lets you change plans, and your one-time Medigap Open Enrollment window gives you a guaranteed right to buy a supplement without health questions. Enrollment in a plan may be limited to certain times of the year, so timing matters.
