Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage sold by private insurers approved by Medicare. You can get it as a standalone plan alongside Original Medicare or built into a Medicare Advantage plan. Each plan has its own formulary (list of covered drugs), pharmacy network, and cost tiers, so the best plan is the one that covers your specific medications for the lowest total cost.
If you go without creditable prescription drug coverage after you are first eligible, Medicare can add a permanent late-enrollment penalty to your premium. Enrolling on time avoids it. Plans can change their formularies and prices each year, so an annual review keeps your coverage aligned with your prescriptions.
You can join a Part D plan during your Initial Enrollment Period around age 65 and change plans during the Annual Enrollment Period each fall (October 15 to December 7). Enrollment may be limited to these windows.
Maru is a licensed independent agency. We compare each plan's formulary, tiers, and pharmacy network against your drug list to find the lowest total annual cost, and review your plan each year as your medications change. Our help costs you nothing.
