Medicare is the federal health program for people 65 and older and for some younger people with qualifying disabilities. Part A covers hospital and inpatient care, Part B covers doctor visits and outpatient care, Part C (Medicare Advantage) is a private-plan alternative that bundles A and B, and Part D covers prescription drugs. Most Washington beneficiaries also add a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan or choose a Medicare Advantage plan to round out coverage.
Most people choose between two paths: Original Medicare plus a Medigap policy and a standalone Part D drug plan, which keeps the freedom to see any provider that accepts Medicare; or a Medicare Advantage plan, which bundles coverage through a private insurer that typically uses a network and often includes drug coverage. You generally cannot combine a Medigap policy with a Medicare Advantage plan. Maru explains both so you can pick the one that fits your health and budget.
Washington is unusually consumer-friendly for people who choose the Medigap path: each year around your birthday you can switch to an equal or lesser Medicare Supplement plan without new medical underwriting. This annual window lets you re-shop as prices change—a right most states do not offer.
Your Initial Enrollment Period runs for seven months around your 65th birthday. The Annual Enrollment Period each fall (October 15 to December 7) lets you change plans, and your one-time Medigap Open Enrollment window gives you a guaranteed right to buy a supplement without health questions. Enrollment in a plan may be limited to certain times of the year, so timing matters.
Maru is a licensed independent agency. We compare the specific Medicare Advantage, Medigap, and Part D options available in your county, coordinate your drug coverage, and explain the birthday rule so you can use it to your advantage. Our help costs you nothing—carriers pay licensed agents and plan prices are set the same whether you enroll with us or on your own.
