Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage sold by private insurers approved by Medicare. You can get it as a standalone plan alongside Original Medicare, or built into a Medicare Advantage plan. Each Part D plan has its own list of covered drugs (a formulary), pharmacy network, and cost tiers, so the best plan is the one that covers your specific medications for the lowest total cost. Maru is a licensed independent agency that compares the Part D plans available to you.

Quick take: Two people on different medications can have very different "best" Part D plans. Matching a plan to your actual drug list — not just its premium — is where the real savings are, and it is exactly what we help you do.

How Part D works

Part D plans group covered drugs into tiers with different copays, and each plan publishes its own formulary. Plans can change their formularies and prices each year, which is why an annual review matters. There is also a late-enrollment penalty if you go without creditable drug coverage after you are first eligible, so enrolling on time protects you from lasting surcharges.

Enrollment and timing

You can join a Part D plan during your Initial Enrollment Period around age 65 and change plans during the Annual Enrollment Period each fall (October 15 to December 7). Enrollment may be limited to these windows. We help you review your drug list each year so your plan still fits.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which Part D plan is best for me?
It comes down to your specific medications. We compare each plan's formulary, tiers, and pharmacy network against your drug list to find the lowest total annual cost — not just the lowest premium.
Is there a penalty for signing up late?
Yes. If you go without creditable prescription drug coverage after you are first eligible, Medicare can add a permanent late-enrollment penalty to your premium. Enrolling on time avoids it, and we help you stay on schedule.
Do you offer every Part D plan in my area?
No. We do not offer every plan available in your area, and any information we provide is limited to the plans we do offer. For all of your options, contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE.
Does your help cost anything?
No. Carriers pay licensed agents and plan prices are set regardless of how you enroll, so our guidance never costs you more.
