Going without creditable drug coverage can add a lasting Part D penalty. Estimate it using the current national base premium you enter.
The Part D late-enrollment penalty applies if you go 63 or more days without Medicare drug coverage or other creditable drug coverage after your Initial Enrollment Period. By law it equals 1% of the “national base beneficiary premium” times the number of full months you went without coverage, rounded to the nearest 10 cents.
The national base beneficiary premium is set by Medicare each year, so enter the current figure for an accurate estimate. Because the base changes annually, your penalty amount can change from year to year even though the number of late months stays the same.
For educational estimates only. This tool gives a general estimate based on the numbers you enter. It is not a quote, an application, or a determination of benefits, eligibility, or price. Nothing is stored from what you type here — the estimate is calculated in your browser.
Figures that change every year — such as the standard Part B premium, the Part D national base beneficiary premium, and IRMAA income brackets — are entered by you so the math always reflects the current year. Always verify current amounts at Medicare.gov or 1‑800‑MEDICARE.
